Jason’s Journey with Cystic Fibrosis — From Diagnosis to Riding for South Africa

At just 8 months old, Jason was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) — a life-limiting genetic condition that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. From the very beginning, his life involved daily treatments, hospital visits, and constant management of his health. But Jason’s story has never been defined by limitation — it has been defined by determination.

Defying Expectations

Living with CF requires relentless discipline. Daily physiotherapy, medication, careful nutrition, and managing infections are all part of the routine. As Jason grew older, he also developed CF-related Diabetes, adding another layer of complexity to his health journey.
Despite these challenges, Jason refused to let CF hold him back.
In 2015, he made history by becoming the first person with Cystic Fibrosis to compete in the Cape Epic – the toughest mountain bike stage races in the world. This was not only a personal milestone, but a powerful moment of hope for the CF community. Jason showed that even with a serious chronic illness, incredible goals are still possible.

The Trikafta Turning Point

For many people living with CF, the introduction of Trikafta has been life-changing – and Jason is one of them.
Trikafta is a breakthrough CFTR modulator therapy that treats the underlying cause of cystic fibrosis rather than just the symptoms. For Jason, access to this treatment meant:

• Improved lung function
• Increased energy levels
• Better recovery after exercise
• Fewer infections and hospitalisations
• The ability to train more consistently
• Renewed hope for the future

Trikafta didn’t just improve Jason’s health – it expanded what felt possible. Activities that once required enormous effort became sustainable, and endurance events that once seemed out of reach became achievable goals.

Riding to Inspire — Japan 2026

Today, Jason continues to push boundaries. He has been selected to represent South Africa to cycle at the Gran Fondo age group world Championship in Japan this August — an incredible achievement and another opportunity to inspire others living with CF.
